The original painting was bought for the Tate Gallery in 1887.The inspiration for this image came during a boating trip Sargent took on the Thames river at Pangbourne in September 1885, with American artist Edwin Austin Abbey, during which he saw Chinese lanterns hanging among trees and lilies.
