| "This beautiful museum art print is of an oil on canvas painting by John Singer Sargent, dated 1885-6. The original painting was bought for the Tate Gallery in 1887.The inspiration for this image came during a boating trip Sargent took on the Thames river at Pangbourne in September 1885, with American artist Edwin Austin Abbey, during which he saw Chinese lanterns hanging among trees and lilies. The models for the painting were Polly and Dorothy Bernard, the daughters of the illustrator Frederick Barnard.This is one of the few figure compositions Sargent ever made out of doors in the Impressionist manner. He was only able to work for only a few minutes each evening when the light was exactly right.
