"Cinderella: Tribute to a Classic" |
"This is a newly recorded version of the soundtrack to Cinderella, with Linda Ronstadt singing ""A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes"" (in English and in Spanish), Take 6 singing ""The Work Song,"" Bobby McFerrin singing ""Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo (The Magic Song),"" and James Ingram singing ""So This Is Love,"" plus the orchestral score, which takes up half the album. (Jazz instrumentalists David Benoit and David Sanborn are also named on the album cover and shown in photographs, and though their specific contributions are not noted, they are heard on a ""Cinderella Medley."") The singers are good, especially Ronstadt, who is typically warm, and McFerrin, who has lots of fun duetting with himself, though it's not clear why it was necessary to add new lyrics to some of the songs. The score remains an appealing 1940s effort. ~ William Ruhlmann"

Disney characters help sing songs like ""Centerfield,"" ""Hey, Mickey!,"" ""I Know I Can,"" and ""We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions,"" while versions of arena favorites like ""Pump Up the Jam"" and Disney tunes like ""Casey at the Bat"" round out this entertaining, energetic collection. ~ Heather Phares"

"Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas" |
"This collection of holiday songs and originals from the second Beauty and the Beast movie by Disney hits all the right notes. The traditional ""Deck the Halls,"" ""O Christmas Tree,"" ""What Child Is This"" are as delightful and enjoyable as if they were new. Those songs that are new fit right in. Paige O'Hara is the star here, her Belle sweet, pure and clear. But the rest of the vocal cast is more than up to the task, with Bernadette Peters and a sly Tim Curry joining Angela Lansbury, Jerry Orbach and David Ogden Stiers. The interplay between Orbach's Lumiere and Stiers as Cogsworth alone is worth the price of the disc. Add the Christmas magic, and the new songs as a bonus, and you've got a wonderful record for kids and parents both. ~ Ross Boissoneau"

"The Music of Disney: A Legacy in Song" |
"A beautifuly packaged three-CD box set of Disney music throughout the years. Disney buffs will love this set, although there are some popular songs missing. Overall, The Music of Disney: A Legacy in Song proves how significant the music from Disney's films and television shows were to popular music and popular culture in general. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine"

"The Haunted Mansion: Haunted Hits" |
"A thunderstorm forces two teens to take refuge in a sinister house that turns out to be haunted by a number of terrifying but benign spirits in this children's story album from Walt Disney Productions. Released in 1969 to coincide with the opening of Disneyland's ""Haunted Mansion"" attraction, the record approximates the experience of taking a ride through this elaborate haunted house, detailing many of the same spooky features that visitors to the Magic Kingdom could experience in person. Fresh from his role as Opie on The Andy Griffith Show, a young Ron Howard appears as one half of the teenaged couple. He's paired with Disneyland Records mainstay Robie Lester, a busy commercial jingle singer who had supplied narration for a number of previous Disney storytelling albums. Though visitors to the actual theme park attraction were guided by the familiar tones of voiceover artist Paul Frees as ""the Ghost Host,"" actor Pete Renoudet performed the task for the LP. Another Disney veteran with films such as The Love Bug and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes under his belt, Renoudet also provided voice work for other Disneyland attractions including ""the Country Bear Jamboree."" The Haunted Mansion is breezily ghastly and comes with a colorful 11-page booklet illustrating the various headless ghosts, rattling coffins, and waltzing spirits that fill the grooves. Nothing gets too scary, though it is possibly the first Walt Disney product to include the phrase ""decaying corpses"" and invoke the image of suicide by hanging. In 2003, Walt Disney Pictures released a film inspired by the theme park attraction starring Eddie Murphy, though the plot differed greatly from this out of print LP. ~ Fred Beldin"

"Radio Disney: Ultimate Jams, Vol. 1-6 [CD & DVD]" |
"Radio Disney: Ultimate Jams collects singles from the Radio Disney collections as well as from other Disney albums and soundtracks. Teen queen Hilary Duff kicks off the collection with ""I Can't Wait,"" which despite -- or perhaps because of -- its prefab sound, is a pretty entertaining piece of 21st century bubblegum pop. The album also reaches back to '90s dance-pop for Eiffel 65's ""Blue (Da Ba Dee),"" 2 Unlimited's ""Get Ready for This,"" and Technotronic's endlessly fun ""Pump Up the Jam,"" and goes back even farther for the Village People's ""YMCA"" and James Brown's ""I Got You (I Feel Good)."" D-Tent Boys' ""Dig It,"" which appeared on the Holes soundtrack, Jump5's ""Spinnin' Around,"" and Hampton the Hampster's ""The Hampster Dance Song"" are some of the other highlights of this mostly peppy collection. Radio Disney: Ultimate Jams also features a DVD with videos for ""I Can't Wait,"" ""The Hampster Dance Song,"" ""Spinnin' Around,"" Lou Bega's ""Disney Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of),"" and Stevie Brock's ""All for Love."" ~ Heather Phares"

"Disney Princess: The Ultimate Song Collection" |
"Disney Princess The Ultimate Song Collection is one of the better ideas for a Disney compilation: it's a collection of most of the memorable songs sung by the princesses in films spanning Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to Pocahontas and Mulan. The album opens with ""If You Can Dream,"" a new song featuring all of the vocal talents behind the princesses in the later Disney movies. Like most diva collaborations, it's less than the sum of its parts, with bland songwriting detracting from the performances of Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid's Ariel), Lea Salonga (Aladdin's Jasmine and Mulan), Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas), and Paige O'Hara (Beauty and the Beast's Belle). However, the rest of the collection is strong, serving up memorable songs from latter-day Disney films like The Little Mermaid's ""Part of Your World"" and ""Kiss the Girl"" and The Lion King's ""Can You Feel the Love Tonight."" Kuhn's performances of Pocahontas' ""Just Around the Riverbend"" and ""Colors of the Wind"" are also standouts due to her striking voice, which is stronger and more womanly than most of the other singers who have given their voices to Disney princesses. Happily, the love songs from the studio's classic films get their due as well: the purity and sweetness of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves' ""Someday My Prince Will Come,"" Cinderella's ""So This Is Love,"" and Sleeping Beauty's ""Once Upon a Dream"" are welcome reminders of these films' enduring quality. While it's not as necessary as some other Disney best-ofs, Disney Princess: The Ultimate Song Collection is still a charming celebration of fairy-tale romance. ~ Heather Phares"

"Disneymania Presents: Wow! Christmas" |
"The 2005 edition of RADIO DISNEY JINGLE JAMS overlaps somewhat with the previous year's collection (see the energetic remix of Hilary Duff's ""Santa Claus Lane"" and Ashlee Simpson's rocked-out ""Christmas Past, Present and Future""). However, it does offer five new Yuletide-themed tracks, most notably B5's R&B-tinged ""Someday at Christmas"" and the Beu Sisters' charming, breezy ""Home for Christmas,"" resulting in a fun holiday album that is suitable for the whole family."

"Best of Pooh and Heffalumps, Too" |
"Pooh's Heffalump Movie, the Walt Disney Pictures animated feature that opened in February 2005, didn't have enough music in it to justify a soundtrack album. But it did have material by folk-rock singer/songwriter Carly Simon, who wrote or co-wrote a half-dozen brief numbers and performed most of them, while also singing a version of ""Winnie the Pooh"" from the original Winnie the Pooh cartoons. That only added up to about 16 minutes of music, however, so Walt Disney Records has added a short excerpt from Joel McNeely's musical score along with a bunch of tracks from earlier Winnie the Pooh features to flesh out this compilation CD to just over 31 minutes. That's still pretty short, of course, but the disc was given a budget list price of $12.98 upon release, likely to result in a retail price under ten dollars. Simon, who began her career singing ""Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod"" with her sister Lucy Simon in the folk duo the Simon Sisters, is no stranger to children's music, and she turns in some characteristic tunes that she sings enthusiastically with help from her grownup children Ben Taylor and Sally Taylor, as well as a chorus and assorted actors voicing characters from the film. This is not a major contribution to her record catalog, but it is a pleasant one, and the old favorites like ""The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers"" are as entertaining as ever. ~ William Ruhlmann"

"A Musical History of Disneyland" |
"While the Disney name is more commonly known for its animation, theme parks and countless other attributes, it has produced more than its fair share of popular culture anthems for the past century via its movies, animated shorts and TV specials. And though the marriage of music with the other projects is symbiotic, Disney's soundtracks have always been able to stand alone and remain instantly recognizable to anyone who has grown up with exposure to the Disney brand, a testament to the musicians, songwriters and arrangers that quietly stood in the background for decades while making timeless music. So with nearly a half century behind it, Disney's first theme park, Disneyland, was due for an anthology capturing the essence of visiting the park without actually being there. Collected over six discs, there are field recordings, rare radio excerpts, and soundtracks to the major attractions. To describe it as overwhelming would be a gross understatement, even for the most dyed-in-the-wool Disney fanatic. Divided up by Lands (for those who have yet to visit the park, it is divided into several themes, each with its own atmosphere, which are glued together by a section of the park known as Main Street USA), each disc features musical nuances so minute and in the background of the whole experience, it's easy to take their brilliance for granted. This box set not only rectifies that problem, it helps to bring a greater appreciation to the level of musical detail Disney invested into the theme park. It also unearths long-lost audio excerpts from such events as Walt Disney's dedication on opening day to the big band sounds of Disney's big band. During the '50s, Disney catered to adults during the evening by featuring a band that would play all sorts of music and provide the ideal atmosphere for a date, including carriage rides and fireworks (a precursor to the Pleasure Island aspect Disney would introduce decades later). Virtually every sound imaginable is crammed into this box set, and for this alone it's well worth the price for Disney collectors. As a bonus, there's also a lavish hard-bound book, The Sounds of Disneyland, featuring rare photos, conceptual drawings and in-depth essays. The price may seem steep for such a collection, especially for casual listeners. But for diehards, it's simply essential and one of the finest collections of Disney music ever assembled. ~ Rob Theakston"

"Disney Channel Hits: Take 2" |
"The second volume of Disney Channel Hits follows the format of its first, featuring soundtrack highlights from existing Disney TV shows and movies with a few videos as bonus content. Take 2 starts out with three tracks from 2004's Stuck in the Suburbs, including Jesse McCartney's ""Good Life"" (which is also included in remix form), ""Whatever Life"" from Hilary Duff hopeful Haylie Duff, and the pleasant teen pop of Annelies VanDerPol's ""Over It."" The ""Cheetah Sisters"" theme is reprised from the Cheetah Girls soundtrack, but that set's ""Girl Power"" and ""Cinderella"" appear here in slightly remixed dance-pop forms. Elsewhere, the light pop vehicles for Disney starlets Hayden Panettiere (""My Hero Is You"") and Christy Carlson Romano (""Anyone but Me""; ""Dive In"") differ negligibly from Zetta Bytes and Huckapoo's Pixel Perfect material. The fan who already owns the music from these films probably doesn't need Disney Channel Hits: Take 2, unless its video content is appealing. But for those who don't have the separate soundtracks, this is a nice enough sampler. ~ Johnny Loftus"

"Disney's Happiest Celebration on Earth" |
"After countless collections of songs by current Disney pop stars, the studio finally throws fans of vintage Disney a bone with Disney's Happiest Celebration on Earth, a collection of the music from Disneyland's attractions. Beginning with Walt Disney's dedication speech for the park's opening in 1955, the album captures Disneyland's joyous, and occasionally kitschy, appeal. The album functions as a virtual tour through the park's different areas, with ""Alexander's Ragtime Band"" representing Main Street, U.S.A.'s Coke Corner, and the gleefully goofy ""Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room"" introducing Adventureland. New Orleans Square plays host to two of Disney's Happiest Celebration on Earth's best tracks, ""Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)"" from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and ""Grim, Grinning Ghosts"" from the Haunted Mansion. Several other popular rides and attractions are represented, and while the music from ""Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin"" and ""Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters"" works well, older themes like the spooky exotica that soundtracks ""Rainbow Caverns"" and the dark, thrilling ""Space Mountain"" music have much more character. Likewise, ""Space Mountain (New Daytime Track)"" and LeAnn Rimes' version of Disneyland's 50th anniversary song, ""Remember When,"" fall a bit flat. Still, there's so much childhood nostalgia on Disney's Happiest Celebration on Earth that -- despite a few small quibbles -- it can't help but live up to its name. ~ Heather Phares"

"For Our Children" |
"Inevitably, the first thing that strikes you about this benefit album for pediatric AIDS is the lineup: It contains selections by Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, and Barbra Streisand, among other top stars. When you realize that 17 of the 20 tracks were newly recorded, For Our Children quickly becomes a must-have for fans of a wide variety of artists. Beyond those immediate virtues, however, the album is a diverse, if inconsistent, collection of music, some of it definable as children's music in the sense that it is likely to appeal to children, some songs about children from the perspective of parents. The sequencing of the album moves from upbeat material to quieter efforts; this is the kind of album you want to put on in the last hour of a child's day, as he or she makes the sometimes abrupt transition from energetic activity to sleep. Early on, the standouts are Little Richard's rock & roll and rap version of ""Itsy Bitsy Spider"" and Bruce Springsteen's hilarious ""Chicken Lips and Lizard Hips."" After the halfway point in the album, Elton John's slight instrumental ""The Pacifier"" (not everybody made that much of an effort), the songs turn calmer, led by James Taylor's characteristically friendly reading of Rodgers and Hammerstein's ""Getting to Know You."" Actress Meryl Streep turns out to have creditable pipes on ""Gartan Mother's Lullaby,"" and Jackson Browne and Jennifer Warnes give a folk-rock reading to ""Golden Slumbers."" By the time of Barbra Streisand's austere ""A Child Is Born"" (from her 1975 album Lazy Afternoon), your young one should be asleep already. For Our Children is never less than pleasant, but, as with any random group of grownups, some of its participants have more affinity for children than others. ~ William Ruhlmann"
