Poverty in contemporary society Poverty is a condition affecting all societies, even industrialized ones, where it is based on inter-temporal comparison between different social groups. This course analyses attitudes towards the poor, and how these attitudes influence policies to contrast poverty. It also looks at the way poverty is analyzed and measured. The course is designed for social workers or anyone working in the area of poverty. The course is structured in three blocks. The first part covers the evolution of the social conditions of the poor over time. In the second part students will look at the research methods and tools that make up the “sociologist’s toolbox”. The last part of the course focuses on the Italian context. The concluding lesson is on the way poverty is represented in the media. The lessons follow a logical and chronological order, but the different blocks, and the last lesson, can also be studied separately."

Latin literature in the Post-Augustan period Latin literature in the I century AD needs to be explained in the light of the literary currents that preceded it. But it is also important to focus on those issues which were taking root at that time – the idea of a Roman identity, cultural diversity and relating to different peoples; phenomena that become particularly significant in late Antiquity. Reference to the past was always used to reinforce regional identity, and a sense of belonging to the Romanitas community. To understand how this “dual” identity worked, we need to study Latin writers from the late Antiquity, and see how they relate to other authors, and how they handle the descriptions of diverse peoples and barbarians in their works. Avoiding anachronisms, we will use our study of Latin literature as an expression of a multicultural and inclusive Roman society to draw interesting conclusions about the concepts of Otherness and Coexistence that are relevant to Western populations today."

The making of Italy This course looks at the history of Italy, which dates back 150 years. The lessons in this course will explore the making of Italy, using a concrete or symbolically significant event for each period or problem. Our interpretation revolves around two apparently conflicting assumptions. On the one hand, if we look at Italy in the long-term, it is a very successful country. It was governed by provincial princes and authoritarian regimes until, in 1861, it became a nation state inspired by models of European liberalism. On the other hand, Italy’s history is punctuated by internal strife, geographical divides, bloody conflicts and civil wars. Good examples are the post-war conflict between fascists and socialists, the period of terrorism and the “civil cold war” between pro and anti Berlusconi factions that marked the last two decades. Together we will try to work out the answer, an answer that probably lies in political and social stability, the result of a long “Centre” government and parliament, and intelligent governance of outlying regions, especially in the South, by centrist political parties."

What is commonly meant by the term “electric circuit” is at the same time the basis and essential component of contemporary technology. It is easy to accept that without the development of electrical science and the circuit model, the world as we know it would be totally different. Energy conversion and transmission, mechanization and automation, telecommunications and informatics are all inherently dependent on our ability to analyze, design and build electric circuits. The course introduces and illustrates the basics of electric circuit theory, starting with a definition of the relevant electric strength, and the conditions and laws that define a circuit; then in-depth analysis of linear circuits follows, in steady-state, sinusoidal and dynamic conditions. The main properties of the model are also described, discussing the major model formulations, and the most common techniques of analysis. Learners are then introduced to circuit simulation."

Although there is very little direct evidence about the way Latin was taught in the West, only indirect accounts like Quintilian’s Institutio Oratoria, a series of first-hand accounts exist from the East, highlighting the way Latin was taught between I BC and VI AD. Encouraged by the military occupation and the needs of the administration during the first Imperial Age, Latin spread to outlying areas of the Empire. Latin use became even more popular from the III century AD onwards when the policy was to use Latin for all administration and legal purposes. There was continual contact between Latin speakers and speakers of other languages, and they often tried to learn the language of Rome. First-hand accounts of the spread of Latin language and literature in the Eastern Roman Empire (the so-called pars Orientis) – basically fragments of papyrus or parchment rolls and/or codices, wooden tablets and potsherds - make us reflect on complex phenomena like bilingualism (Latin-Greek) and diglossia, and about the way Latin was perceived and taught as a Second-Language (L2) between Antiquity and Late Antiquity."

The power of opinion polls Opinion polls play a central role in politics and information. This course explores the world of opinion polls and how they are used, to discover their value as tools for democracy and to reduce the risk of survey results being wrongly used. Failure on the part of exit polls in recent elections has contributed to renewed debate on their reliability and usefulness. This course aims to shed light on this debate, explaining, in particular: what a poll is, and what it is not how opinion polls are carried out what the related problems and issues are what are the main challenges posed by new information technologies to what extent do current changes in the political environment and in the composition of the electorate affect the work of public opinion analysts what are the main issues surrounding the use of opinion polls what are the real risks and potential benefits related to the use of opinion polls at the level of government"

Japanese Business Management"
"The Japanese economy was once described as the “rising sun,” overcoming all odds to become an economic superpower. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, many of the largest companies in the world with the highest capitalization were Japanese. Often, the key to Japan's success was attributed to its unique business model, strategies and practices. However, Japan no longer enjoys strong growth. Since the infamous “burst of the bubble”, Japanese companies have slipped from dominance and lost their competitive edge to companies in America, China and other regions. Japan's once highly acclaimed business management has been critiqued, judged, and brought into question. Japan is now in a transitional phase. Some companies are cementing their traditional business practices, others are transforming their strategies entirely, while still others are unsure how to adapt to the new times. This course is essential for anyone aiming to be a global leader. It helps them understand the basics of Japanese business, Japan's rise (including its successes and failures), and allows them to see future potential. The course takes a holistic approach. It looks not only at strategy and practices, but also at the entire management ecosystem. It explores factors ranging from socioeconomic to international interventions that helped shape Japanese corporate culture, strategy and vision. This course has been designed to give future leaders the right mindset to be a global leader. Learners study various corporate philosophies and case studies to see firsthand the benefits - and limitations - of Japanese business management.

"Exploring Sustainable Development"
"Have you ever wondered why there is such a focus on Sustainable Development in the public debate today? In this course you will be introduced to the concept of sustainable development and how it has evolved to what it currently means, a holistic ongoing process to tackle the environmental, social and economic challenges of human development. Sustainable development is more important than ever, not the least, for problem solvers aimed at creating sustainable solutions at the workplace and in society. You will learn about key concepts describing sustainable development, such as the three pillars, and different indicators for sustainable development. You will be introduced to the underlying reasons behind the environmental challenges that we face today, for instance climate change and ocean acidification. Throughout the course, different frameworks to describe sustainable development will be discussed, including normative approaches. This is the first of three courses about sustainable development for problem solvers from KTH, Royal Institute of Technology. Each of the three courses can be taken separately and provide knowledge on how to act, think and approach development in society and for the industry that meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations ability to meet their needs. In the second course, Sustainable Development: Solutions and Trends we go further into solutions to combat environmental challenges such as smart urban metabolism and the sharing economy. In the third course, Enforcing Sustainable Development , we look at what influences current sustainability actions and how people can change via education, and how regulations affect more sustainable behaviours. Situated in Stockholm, Sweden, KTH drives world leading research in sustainability, and offers education for students and staff to ensure that all graduates, as well as the organisation continue to enforce sustainable development. In these courses you meet a multidisciplinary team of teachers and researchers in the forefront of finding solutions for sustainable development. This course is relevant to professionals working in industry, policymakers, or students in engineering, as well as problem solvers in society at large."

"Culture and Law: The East Asian Perspective"
"In most Western cultures, personal identification is based on the individual, whereas in East Asia, the family registry system has been used to identify individuals. “Confucianism” is one of the common ethical values in East Asia. Confucian values place much emphasis on an individual’s moral obligation to family members. In this course, we will cover three themes. We will begin with identifying how Confucian moral and legal reasoning have evolved and the unique aspect of the role of apology in East Asia. The course also introduces the notion of Legal Orientalism and argues against the theory by presenting cases related to the advanced notion of anticipatory repudiation in China, a transfer pricing case in Japan, and Inter-Korea business law in Korea. Students and researchers interested in an introduction to East Asian societies, conflict resolution, negotiation studies, as well as contemporary legal cases in Japan, South Korea, and China are welcomed to join the course and discussions."

"Robotics Foundation II - Robot Control"
"Robotics is commonly defined as the study of the intelligent connection between perception and action. As such, the full scope of robotics lies at the intersection of mechanics, electronics, signal processing, control engineering, computing, and mathematical modeling. Within this very broad framework, modeling and control play a basic role - not only in the traditional context of industrial robotics, but also for the advanced applications of field and service robots, which have attracted increasing interest from the research community in the last twenty years. Robotics foundations are dealt with in this two-part course. The second part covers planning and control. Suitable interpolation techniques are presented to plan trajectories in either joint or operational space. For controlling a robot in the free space, motion control strategies can be either decentralized or centralized. The former leads to independent joint control which treats nonlinear dynamic couplings as disturbance, while the latter is based on the robot dynamic model. PD control with gravity compensation and inverse dynamics control are presented. Operational space control is then introduced as a premise to controlling a robot interacting with the environment. Both indirect and direct force control schemes are developed for constrained motion control. The visual servoing approach is adopted to integrate information about the objects present in the scene into the control loop, where the resulting schemes can be of three types: position-based, image-based, or hybrid. The last part of the course is devoted to mobile robots. Kinematic models of simple vehicles are presented, along with trajectory planning methods which have to properly account for the nonholonomic constraints. The motion control problem is tackled with reference to the trajectory tracking task. Odometric localization techniques are finally presented for practical implementation of feedback control schemes."

"Behavioural Economics in Action"
"How can we get people to save more money, eat healthy foods, engage in healthy behaviors, and make better choices in general? There has been a lot written about the fact that human beings do not process information and make decisions in an optimal fashion. This course builds on much of the fascinating work in the area of behavioral economics and allows learners to develop a hands-on approach by understanding its methods and more importantly, how it can be harnessed by suitably designing contexts to “nudge” choice. In three modules, learners will be able to a) explain and interpret the principles underlying decision-making and compare the nudging approach to other methods of behavior change, b) learn how to critique, design and interpret the results of experiments; and c) design nudges and decision-tools to help people make better decisions. Understanding experimental design and interpretation is central to your ability to use behavioral economics effectively, and will set you apart from people who merely know about the behavioral results. After the first two weeks learning the basic principles, we will devote two weeks to studying experimental design and analysis, and the final two weeks to understanding processes for designing nudges and for helping people make better decisions. You will also witness and participate in weekly topical debates on various topics like “does irrationality impact welfare?” or “what strategy is better for improving welfare – nudging or education?” Several leading scholars, policy makers, business people, authors and commentators will briefly join our debate and discussion sections. These guest lecturers include Professor Sendhil Mullainathan (University of Chicago), Professor John Lynch (University of Colorado), Rory Sutherland (Ogilvy Group), Owain Service (formerly Behavioural Insights Team, UK Cabinet Office), Shankar Vedantam (NPR Columnist and Author – The Hidden Brain), Professors Andrew Ching, Avi Goldfarb (University of Toronto), Nina Mazar (BostonU), Itamar Simonson (Stanford) and many others! This course was originally developed in 2013, and the field has changed over the past 7 years. That said, a) the course provides foundational content that is still very relevant, and b) the material has been updated over the years to capture newer developments. The course will conclude with a summary of the newest developments in the field, and will provide links to resources that learners could access for continued learning. BE101x will be in self-paced format; learners are invited to work through the materials and assessments at their own convenience. The content is based on work done at the University of Toronto’s BEAR centre."

"Japanese Books: From Manuscript to Print"
"Module 1: Books, Scrolls, and Religious Devotion This unit offers special access to a unique group of books and scrolls and sacred objects once interred inside a thirteenth-century Buddhist sculpture of Prince Shotoku, now in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums. The works to be studied represent the most prevalent formats of Japanese books, but they display striking material idiosyncrasies that will help us understand how and why manuscripts were made, and how they could be personalized for individual readers, motivated, in this case, by religious devotion. Module 2: Visual and Textual Storytelling: Short-Story Scrolls Enter into the storyworlds of two lively illustrated Japanese tales, The Tale of the Rat (Nezumi sôshi) and The Chrysanthemum Spirit (Kiku no sei monogatari) in the Harvard Art Museums. Both tales are illustrated in the “small scroll” ( ko-e ) format, roughly half the size of standard scrolls, resembling medieval paperbacks, and intended for personal reading and private libraries. This unit focuses on reading experience, exploring the interrelationship between word and image, and explaining how literary and pictorial conventions work together to communicate a story. Module 3: “Multimedia” Books: The Tale of Genji Japan’s most celebrated work of fiction, The Tale of Genji , has been continuously read from the time it appeared in the eleventh-century to the present day and provides a perfect case study for exploring various book formats over the centuries in Japan. Using decorated manuscripts, richly illustrated albums, and a playful printed book of a Genji spin-off, A Fraudulent Murasaki’s Rustic Genji (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji), this unit showcases the spectacular visual and material properties of Genji volumes that make them suggestive of “multimedia” books."

"Learn about contracts from Harvard Law Professor Charles Fried, one of the world's leading authorities on contract law. Contracts are promises that the law will enforce. But when will the law refuse to honor a promise? What happens when one party does not hold to their part of the deal? This version of the course adds new units on Interpretation, Agency, Partnerships, Corporations, and Government Regulation. We are exposed to contracts in all areas of our life -- agreeing to terms when downloading a new computer program, hiring a contractor to repair a leaking roof, and even ordering a meal at a restaurant. Knowing the principles of contracts is not just a skill needed by lawyers, it illuminates for everyone a crucial institution that we use all the time and generally take for granted. This contract law course, with new materials and updated case examples, is designed to introduce the range of issues that arise when entering and enforcing contracts. It will provide an introduction to what a contract is and also analyze the purpose and significance of contracts. Then, it will discuss the intent to create legal relations, legality and morality, and the distinction between gifts and bargains. The course also investigates common pitfalls: one-sided promises, mistake, fraud, and frustration. With the knowledge of what makes contracts and how they can go wrong, Professor Fried will discuss remedies and specific performance. Finally, Professor Fried will introduce how contracts can create rights for third parties. The course's instructor, Charles Fried, has been teaching at Harvard Law School for more than 50 years and has written extensively on contracts. Not only is Professor Fried a leading authority on contract law, but he also utilizes a story-telling approach to explaining the topic, which creates a unique and interesting class experience."

"Tourism and Climate Change"
"Due to recent developments, we had to postpone production of this course. However we do plan to offer this course at some point. The start date of 1 January, is just a fictive start date and we are working on finding a new start date. Please enroll in this course if you’d like to receive an email when we have more information. You can always switch sessions or un-enroll if needed. Climate change, global warming, extreme weather, a rising sea level; we all hear and see the results of climate change in the daily news. But that’s not all, it’s becoming visible in our own environment and day to day life. Climate change is a growing challenge for the survival of life and mankind on earth. Tourism – in all its forms - is contributing substantially to global warming and climate- and ecosystem changes. Given the fact that international tourism is growing exponentially, there are serious concerns about its contributions to global climate change. We know that this growth will lead to short- and long-term effects for life on earth. For instance, numerous island destinations are becoming flooded. At the same time, we can see how other places are gradually turning into deserts. And if tourism will grow as it does today, we expect it to be solely responsible for an increase of 1,5-2 percent on planet earth by 2070. It is likely that something must change, or that we have to rethink the very ways in which people experience travel in the future. In this online course we address the key challenges that tourism is facing in context of drastic climate change-, mitigation and adaptation challenges. By joining this MOOC you will also gain insights about your personal position and attitude towards - what we frame as - a climate change emergency. You can enrol in a free audit track or upgrade to a verified certificate. If you upgrade to a verified certificate you will get an additional opportunity to position yourself in relation to diverse debates concerning climate change and (calculate) your own travel footprint. You will also engage with fellow learners in (re-)modelling various adaptation and mitigation challenges. These exercises will help you to get a better understanding and reflection of what is at stake and how we may further engage with future tourism issues. The MOOC ends with a range of potential future scenarios of tourism in context of climate change but will also invite you to vote how this course can further develop in the coming years. On basis of this joint decision making, the teaching staff will further equip the content of this course to best address emergent challenges and need for further action. Join and support the successful tourism team at Wageningen University & Research by enrolling in this MOOC and in taking up this climate change challenge towards a more sustainable tourism of tomorrow! Professional Certificate in Sustainable Tourism If you find this MOOC interesting we recommend you to also take a look at our Professional Certificate Programme Sustainable Tourism. A fully dedicated programme about sustainability in the tourism industry. The programme consists of two MOOCs Sustainable Tourism: Rethinking the Future and Sustainable Tourism: Society and Environmental Aspects. This last MOOC is among the 10 best MOOCs in the world and was nominated for the annual edX award in 2019."
