"Pathe Archive -A Year To Remember - The 1940s (DVD)"
"Using rare news footage and interviews from the incredible British Path archive, this extraordinary series provides a unique year by year look at what made the news of yesteryear. With a comprehensive hour long programme on each year of the 1940s, this 3 disc - set package provides the definitive insight into the decade that took us from World War through Victory to an all new age of austerity in a newly divided world. At the beginning of the 1940s - the world woke up to the expansionist ambitions of Nazi Germany as Hitler's forces made steady progress invading Finland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Holland and France. Japan, Yugoslavia, Greece and Bulgaria bolstered the Axis Forces. By 1942, a state of global war ensued; the US had entered the conflict following the Japanese attack on the US Navy at Pearl Harbour and the war spread to campaigns in the Pacific, Burma, North Africa, Russia and the Atlantic. 1943 was a tuning point for the Allies with the bloody siege of Stalingrad ending, success repelling the German forces in Tunisia and the surrender of Italy. D-Day in June 1944 saw the Normandy landings of Allied invasion troops - the world's biggest combined land, sea and air operation. As the Allied force made progress to Berlin and eventual Victory In Europe, the grim realities of the concentration camps were revealed to a disgusted world. Post-war, the United Nations and NATO were formed and the Iron Curtain fell and divided Europe and Berlin. In the UK, a new age of austerity began with wartime rationing continuing and a challenging balance of payments deficit with many produced goods strictly for 'Export Only'. Princess Elizabeth married, the Welfare State and the NHS were inaugurated and the Nationalisation of core public utilities and industries began in earnest under Clement Attlee's post-war Labour government. 9 hours 45 mins; Black and White. Running Time: 585 minutes Region: All Regions Release Date: 28 Feb. 2011"

"Pathe Archive: A Year to Remember - The 1930s (DVD)"
"Using rare news footage and interviews from the incredible British Path archive, this extraordinary series provides a unique look at what made the news of yesteryear. With a comprehensive hour long programme on each year of the 1930s, this 3 disc-set provides the definitive insight into the decade leading up to World War 2. In a world reeling from the Great Depression, the decade was dominated by record levels of unemployment and economic hardship with newsreels doing their best to maintain morale. The growing fascination with technological progress was regularly featured showcasing the rapid developments in flight and speed in particular. The exploits of Amelia Earhart and Malcolm Campbell thrilled people up and down the country. The world was shrinking too with the first telephone call between Britain and Australia and the launch of the Zeppelin airships. Following the death of King George V, Britain was soon to be rocked by the abdication of his successor King Edward VIII over his intention to marry the twice divorced socialite Wallis Simpson. His brother George VI, the so-called 'reluctant king', proved an immensely popular replacement. The decade was an era of great and lasting political change. In Britain, Ramsey MacDonald led the first National Government, whilst in the U.S.A. Franklin D. Roosevelt came to power after vowing to end Prohibition. However, it was the rise of Adolf Hitler and his fascist regime in German politics that made the world bristle. Despite the diplomatic efforts of Neville Chamberlain with his promise of ""peace in our time"", war was officially declared in 1939. Other more light hearted events of the decade are included such as the first egg-timer alarms, Fred Perry winning Wimbledon, the first indoor ski slope and the introduction of an albeit rudimentary driving test! Relive all these events and many, many more with ""A Year To Remember: The 1930s"" Region: Region 2 Release Date: 30/05/2011"

"Pathe Collection -A Year To Remember - The 1950s (DVD)"
"Using rare news footage and interviews from the incredible British Path archive, this extra-ordinary series provides a unique year by year look at what made the news of yesteryear. With a comprehensive hour long programme on each year of the 1950s, this 3 disc - set package provides the definitive insight into the decade that took us from post-war austerity to consumer boom. The morale-boosting Festival of Britain in 1951 was held to encourage commerce in challenging times - rationing was still in effect and the post-war baby boom come to fruition in the birth of 'teenage' culture. This sizeable younger population was making its new found spending power felt with the rise of 'Rock n Roll' and the emergence of coffee shops on street corners. Although the decade began with a Labour government with Clement Attlee as Prime Minister, the Conservatives would dominate the decade with Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden and Howard Macmillan all taking residence at 10 Downing Street. It was a challenging time for the politicians as they dealt with the Suez Canal Crisis, the Soviet invasion of Hungary, further H-Bomb testing and, closer to home, the horrific Harrow and Wealdstone train disaster. The whole country was also united in grief with the passing of King George VI, and then with pride as the masses witnessed the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.It was also a period marked by scientific and technological progress; the first Sputnik Satellite, the last ride on the London Tram, the Polio vaccination and, much to the dislike of motorists everywhere, the introduction of the parking meter. This collection also features some of the more light hearted events of the decade such as Bing Crosby playing golf in Scotland, Bolton Wanderers beating Manchester United to lift the FA Cup and the 100th Varsity Boat Race. Relive all these events and many, many more with ""A Year To Remember: The 1950s""9 hours 45 mins; Black and White. Running Time: 590 minutes Region: All Regions Release Date: 31 Jan. 2011"

"Paula Rego: Telling Tales"
"Telling Tales is another documentary from director Jake Auerbach exploring the life and art of one of Britains leading contemporary artists, Dame Paula Rego. Dame Paula Rego, a Portuguese native who now lives and works from her private London studio who is best known for her painting and prints based upon storybooks. The film is set between her exhibition at the Reina Sofia in Madrid and her London studio, where we are presented with her work alongside a candid yet comical commentary about the very personal motives that drive her need to create art. Rego is a respected name in the art realm having studied at the famous Slade School of Fine Art and University College London and went onto work alongside the likes of David Hockney, and the father of Jake, the films director, German artist Frank Auerbach. Despite favouring pastels over oils for the longevity of her career, her style has evolved over the years, moving away from her abstract earlier work towards more representational art. Her Portuguese heritage largely influences her work visually through folk-themes, with the semiotics of her work reflecting feminist themes. Discs: 1 Cert: E"
