"Tandoori Nights: Series 1 and 2 (DVD)"
"Saeed Jaffrey stars in this spicy, ground-breaking Channel 4 comedy about feuding curry houses. Jimmy Sharma (Saeed Jaffrey - My Beautiful Launderette) makes good living running upscale Brick Lane Indian restaurant The Jewel in the Crown. That is until one of his former waiters opens a rival establishment The Far Pavilions right across the street. The new restaurant might not be as fancy, with flock wallpaper, and even chips on the menu, but Jimmy's profits soon start to fall. Jimmy is both helped and hindered by his feisty daughters Asha (Rita Wolf) and Bubbly (Shelley King - Coronation Street), who are closely watched by dominant matriarch Gran (Zohra Segal), who wants to ensure they are married off soon to a suitable husband. Created by prolific writer, producer and activist Farrukh Dhondy, and producer and co-founder of Picture Palace Films, Malcolm Craddock, the series addresses controversial issues for the time about sexual and racial equality, and takes a wry look at interracial tensions between London's Indian and Bangladeshi communities, sassy, politicised Asian women, mixed-race relationships and grasping business methods. First broadcast in 1985 on Channel 4, this series was not just an important TV landmark for being one of the earliest TV shows to feature a predominantly Asian cast, but also for featuring episodes written by a young Meera Syal before her days working on The Kumars. "Tanks at War - Pz Kpfw VI Tiger (DVD)"
"The story of Germany's most famous and formidable battle tank The Tiger Tank was the most frightening armoured vehicle that fought during WW2, earning its reputation as the indestructible killing machine. It first appeared on the battlefield in 1942, and nothing in the Allied arsenal could stand up to it. It weighed a huge 56 tons, was heavily armoured and built around a 88mm cannon. The Tiger enjoyed a kill ratio of 10:1 on the Western Front, and 18:1 against the Soviets. Allied tanks' only choice was to get dangerously close to hit it or overwhelm it with sheer numbers. Each Tiger cost 1 million Marks and 3.5 million man hours to build, and only 1,500 were ever made. If it could have been mass produced, it may have had a huge impact on the outcome of the war. This DVD tells the story of the Tiger at war, from its development in 1937 to the fall of the Third Reich. It is packed full of original footage of the Tiger in action from rare factory film and stills, and closely looks at the combat deployments and tactics used, including dramatic accounts of some of its key engagements. Also covered are unit markings, schematics, camouflage patterns and crew uniforms. Running Time: 74 minutes Region: All Regions Release Date: 14 Feb. 2005"
