"Bristol After The Bombs (DVD)"
"After it was devastated by the Luftwaffe's bombing raids during the Second World War, much of Central Bristol was rebuilt in the 1950s, and a new shopping centre emerged in Broadmead. Illustrated by evocative archive film, never previously released on DVD, and stunning period photographs, this is the story of how and why the city underwent such massive changes. Until it was virtually wiped out in 1940, Castle Street was Bristol's principal shopping area. The planners decided that Broadmead was to be the post-war retail centre, and stores such as Woolworths and Marks & Spencer were among the first of the new arrivals in the early 1950s. Towards the end of the decade, the huge structures of Lewis's and Jones' dominated the scene. You will also see glimpses of pubs, streets and businesses which were swept away by these new developments. The story is enhanced by interviewees who remember the city at that time, and modern film which provides a comparison with many of the places depicted in the archive footage. Produced in association with Bristol Record Office, and narrated by eminent local historian and author Mike Hooper, this documentary will be enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in Bristol, past or present. "Bristol After The Bombs - Vol 2 (DVD)"
"The second volume of a series which explores how Bristol arose in the 1950s from the ashes of the Blitz. New places to live and work were desperately required, as were improved road systems. Using previously unreleased archive footage, our journey begins in Temple and proceeds to Redcliffe, which was transformed in this period as small Georgian streets were obliterated to make way for maisonettes and flats. Moving towards Temple Meads Station, we see the many changes in the Victoria Street area, and then head to Jacobs Wells Road, where St Peter's House and Brandon House were being built. A brief visit to Clifton shows the construction of the Maples store on The Triangle, before heading to Kingsdown, Bristol's first planned suburb in the 18th century. You will enjoy fabulous views from the top of St Michael's Hill and see how much of the housing here was swept away for the expansion of Bristol University and nearby hospitals. Via Stokes Croft, we then move on to St Judes, where slums were cleared in the 1930s and flats were built in the post-war period. The 1950s scene in Barton Hill was particularly dramatic, with people looking for firewood amongst rubble alongside the building of the first tower block outside London. Turning to the south of the city, we visit Bedminster, and see how areas such as York Road and St Lukes Road were affected, along with the building of new industrial estates around Whitehouse Street. This odyssey of Bristol's post-war history ends in Brislington, as what was once a tranquil North Somerset village became dominated by a large trading estate. Local historian Mike Hooper guides us through these dramatic changes and, in addition to almost an hour of archive footage, the extensive use of maps, photographs and modern film provides the perfect 'past and present' comparison. Interviewees with other local historians and residents add extra flavour. Running Time: 101 minutes Region: Region 2"

"Bristol Aircraft: A Century Of Flight (DVD)"
"With the help of rare archive film, fascinating photographs and informed comment this presentation celebrates the Bristol's proud aviation heritage. The instigator of Bristol's aircraft industry was George White, a locally born businessman of humble origins, who was later knighted for his achievements. Already experienced in the manufacture of motor buses and trams, he was an interested observer in the Wright Brothers' early experiments in powered flight. This provided the inspiration to begin his own aircraft production, and the Bristol and Colonial Aeroplane Company evolved at the top of Filton Hill. The former tram shed was adapted to house the assembly of Bristol's first aircraft, the Boxkite. With the outbreak of World War One, the Bristol Scout, a fighter aircraft, defended the country against Zeppelin airships as they crossed the channel. The end of hostilities saw a massive reduction in demand, and the Great Depression spelt hard times for the company, which needed to revert to the production of buses. However, with another European war looming, in 1935 the government decided to modernise the R.A.F.'s archaic resources. Consequently, the Britain First, a very highly advanced aircraft for the time, was developed at Filton. This led to the production of the Blenheim and the Beaufighter, both of which played a key role in the Second World War. The importance of Filton made it a strategic target for Nazi Germany, and both the works and the surrounding residential area suffered devastating air raids. Peacetime brought a new challenge, and the company once more diversified with the production of cars and prefabricated buildings. Soon afterwards, the Brabazon and Britannia projects emerged, followed by the Type 188, the last aircraft to carry the Bristol name. Bristol's role in the development of Concorde is also featured, together with an overview of the company's evolution into the Airbus industry of today. "Bristol International Balloon Fiesta (DVD)"
"This presentation beautifully illustrates the full glory of Europe`s largest annual balloon fiesta, an attraction that has become one of the most popular outdoor events in the UK, with half a million visitors each year. You will also enjoy a behind-the-scenes insight into what makes the fiesta such a success. Set in the rolling parkland of Bristol`s Ashton Court Estate, the fiesta includes mass balloon launches, providing a spectacular show for those at the event and also for spectators throughout the area. There is also a wide range of other activities, including daredevil stunts, and fun for all the family in a carnival atmosphere. The history of ballooning in Bristol, which goes as far back as the pioneering days of the late 18th century, is also explored, revealing another dimension to what may appear to be a very modern story. There is also a special report on Cameron Balloons, the world`s largest manufacturer of hot-air balloons, who produced the balloon that completed the first solo round-the-world flight in 2001. The company`s founder and Managing Director, Don Cameron, adds insightful comment to the story, and so it is fitting that the presentation should end with a balloon flight piloted by Don himself!"

"Bristols Great War (DVD)"
"As a major city, and one of Britains two main Atlantic ports, Bristols role in the First World War was significant: 55,000 of her men went to war, of whom 6,000 would never return, while her brave seamen defied U-Boats to bring in vital food supplies. Bristol also produced numerous vital products for the war effort, from cigarettes and chocolate to aircraft, munitions and mustard gas, and women began to take on what was previously seen as mens work. Bristol also looked after 2,000 Belgian refugees, it was home to seventeen war hospitals and more than 1,000 POWs were held at five camps in the area. Red Cross Parcels were a Bristol invention and Portishead-born Fred Weatherly wrote Roses of Picardy, one of the most famous songs of the conflict. Sir Fabian Ware, born in Clifton, founded what is now known as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which does so much excellent work to preserve the memory of fallen heroes. You will see a wide selection of memorials and war cemeteries, in Bristol and in France and Belgium, where battlefields and sites of commemoration associated with the Gloucestershire Regiment are visited. Locations include the awe-inspiring Thiepval on the Somme, the biggest memorial to British soldiers in the world, and Menin Gate in Ypres, where a poignant ceremony has been held every evening since 1928, apart from during Nazi occupation. A host of rare archive material includes an audio interview with an old soldier, who tells how he joined up at the Colston Hall Recruiting Centre, and high quality, previously unseen footage of Gloucestershire Territorials hastily returning to Temple Meads from a summer camp at Minehead, on August 3rd 1914, the day before the outbreak of war. The story is enhanced by interviews with a host of specialist contributors, and superb modern location film, both in the Bristol area and on the continent. Region: Region 2 Release Date: N/A"
