"Something Old, New, Borrowed, Blue Wedding Pin"
"This wedding pin was inspired by the old English rhyme, ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue, a sixpence in your shoe’. We know you probably haven’t heard the sixpence part, neither did we before this. Each piece on this wedding pin represents an element from this old English rhyme. The genuine lucky sixpence is something old, while the bride charm is something new. The key charm is something borrowed, and the Swarovski crystal heart charm is something blue. There is even a charm that can be engraved with something that is special to the people getting married. This is a piece that can be treasured. A little reminder of a special day."

"Storm Glass"
"<p style=""text-align: justify;"">You’ve heard of a tempest in a teacup, but how about a storm glass? This super-clever Storm Glass will change the way you see the weather… literally!   </p> <p style=""text-align: justify;"">The Storm Glass is a teardrop-shaped container, made of clear glass. It’s filled with liquid that looks perfectly clear… provided the weather is clear, too. But, like a timid office intern, this glass reacts notably to pressure and temperature. In the glass’s case, the liquid changes from clear to cloudy to crystal flakes when a storm is in full swing! (The intern likely just faints).</p> <p style=""text-align: justify;"">To make sure this glass’s storm-detecting crystals work like they’re supposed to, keep it out of direct sunlight or heating and air conditioning. Also, give it around 2 weeks, when new, to adapt to the environment before it can really start sensing those storms.  </p> <p style=""text-align: justify;"">Gone are your days of dreading the rain. Now, as you watch the transformation inside this weather-predicting glass, you’ll love weather changes more than an animated TV weather presenter! So, to start actually enjoying storms, be sure to get your Keycraft Storm Glass today!</p>"

"Mr Andrews Detail from Mr and Mrs Andrews"
"This portrait is the masterpiece of Gainsborough's early years. It was painted after his return home from London to Suffolk in 1748, soon after the marriage of Robert Andrews of the Auberies and Frances Carter of Ballingdon House, near Sudbury in November of that year. The landscape evokes Robert Andrew's estate, to which his marriage added property. He has a gun under his arm, while his wife sits on an elaborate Rococo-style wooden bench. The painting of Mrs Andrews' lap is unfinished. The space may have been reserved for a child for Mrs Andrews to hold. The painting follows the fashionable convention of the conversation piece, a (usually) small-scale portrait showing two or more people, often out of doors. The emphasis on the landscape here allows Gainsborough to display his skills as a painter of convincingly changing weather and naturalistic scenery, still a novelty at this time. var google_conversion_id = 1036028993; var google_conversion_language = ""en""; var google_conversion_format = ""3""; var google_conversion_color = ""666666""; var google_conversion_label = ""JK0jCKnNkwIQwZiC7gM""; var google_conversion_value = 0;"

"Christen Købke : Danish Master of Light (PB)"
"Christen Købke (1810-1848) was arguably the greatest painter of Denmark’s ‘Golden Age’, the period of the nation’s supreme artistic achievement. He had the remarkable ability to invest the simplest corner of town or countryside with charm and delicacy, and endowed ordinary people and places, and simple motifs, with a universal significance; a world in microcosm. This beautiful designed and accessibly written book discusses Købke’s achievement and also highlights the most innovative aspects of his work, including his fascination with light and atmosphere, his exquisite originality and his experimental outlook. "An American Experiment: George Bellows and the Ashcan Painters"
"In the first decades of the 20th century, painters of the Ashcan School, a loosely connected group of gritty, urban realists, created images of New York City from street level. Following older artist Robert Henri's insistence that artists should make 'pictures from life', the Ashcanners renounced the polished academic style taught in art schools of the time. Instead they practised a more urgent manner, seeking to catch the ebb and flow of life in urban America. Some of them also produced vivid landscapes with a highly saturated colour palette and portraits. An American Experiment: George Bellows and the Ashcan Painters introduces the painters of the Ashcan School and the key characteristics and themes of their work. Detailed commentaries are provided for twelve significant paintings by George Bellows, William Glackens, Robert Henri, George Luks, and John Sloan. In their visual contemplation of early-20th-century New York, these artists offer deep insights into the nature of urban life not only in their time but also in our own. David Peters Corbett is Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of East Anglia. He was founding director of the interdisciplinary Centre for Modern Studies, University of York. Katherine Bourguignon is associate curator, Terra Foundation for American Art Europe, Paris. Christopher Riopelle is Curator of Post-1800 Paintings at the National Gallery, London. An American Experiment: George Bellows and the Ashcan Painters was published alongside the exhibition An American Experiment: George Bellows and the Ashcan Painters 1900 –1918, at the National Gallery, London, 3 March-30 May 2011."

"The Sixteenth Century Italian Paintings: Volume II"
"This volume includes some of the greatest pictures in the National Gallery: Titian’s Vendramin Family venerating a Relic of the True Cross and The Death of Actaeon; Veronese’s Family of Darius and his four Allegories, and Tintoretto’s Origin of the Milky Way. There are also new discoveries, such as the small painting by Veronese of The Rape of Europa, long considered a copy, whose quality is revealed by recent cleaning. The great Bassano family, who worked outside Venice but often in the service of the city and its art market, is also well represented. Veronese may be the artist whose entire range is best displayed, with paintings of all sizes and types from his youth to maturity. But the influence of Titian pervades the entire period covered in this catalogue, and for that reason his works after 1540 are included here; his earlier paintings will appear in another volume. The catalogue can also serve as an introduction to all the major types of painting produced in the city: the altarpiece, the confraternity chapel decoration, the ceiling painting, paintings for the portego (the long central hall of a palace), the portrait, and even furniture painting. Many of these pictures have passed through some of the greatest collections in Europe – most notably those of Emperor Rudolph II, in Prague, of Queen Christina of Sweden and of the Duc d’Orléans – and the stories behind their provenance represent key episodes in the history of European taste. The author’s account of how these works were acquired makes this catalogue an important contribution to the history of collecting and to the history of the National Gallery itself. NICHOLAS PENNY was Director of the National Gallery from 2008 to 2015. He was previously Senior Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and prior to that, Keeper and Clore Curator at the National Gallery, London. His publications include Giotto to Dürer (1991); the Catalogue of European Sculpture in the Ashmolean Museum (1992); The Materials of Sculpture (1993); the National Gallery catalogue of The Sixteenth Century Italian Paintings Volume I: Bergamo, Brescia and Cremona (2004); A Closer Look: Frames (2010); and The National Gallery, London: Director’s Choice (2011). "Special Offer: Buy any 2 books from the ""A Closer Look"" series for only £15. View the Series here Author Erika Langmuir, OBE, (d. 2015) was educated in France and the United States. She taught at the University of Sussex and held the Chair of Art History at the Open University. She was Head of Education at the National Galley (1988–1995). Erika is author of Masterpieces and The National Gallery Companion Guide. A Closer Look: Saints explains, through the National Gallery's comprehensive collection of religious images, the significance of saints and their role in the history of European painting. Erika Langmuir describes how saints became part of the institutions of the Christian church, the different types of saints, and the increasing importance of saintly relics in the Middle Ages. Explaining the way in which saints were created - the process of canonisation and the promotion of candidates by religious orders, A Closer Look: Saints also provides an introduction to a wide variety of personalities, from the ambiguous penitent Mary Magdalen and the obscure martyrs venerated only by the cities of which they were protectors, to internationally celebrated figures whose sermons and deeds are well documented, such as Saint Jerome or Saint Francis of Assisi. Saints may be familiar figures in religious paintings, even to non-Christians, but A Closer Look: Saints explains in an authoritative yet accessible style the many ways in which they once played a part in religious practice and in the lives of individuals and communities.
