| "The Red and the Black is a commentary on the world of finance in the current global recession. The composition is divided into a chequerboard of red and black numbered squares, reminiscent of the random layout of the roulette wheel and hinting at the risks we all take when investing our money. The squares are numbered, the figures’ lack of colour making them stand out to the viewer, reminding us that the world of banking and finance all comes down to digits often featuring a large zero. Each square is also layered with a different currency symbol, reflecting the global nature of economics. Running across the whole composition are a sequence of letters, which upon closer examination can be seen to spell phrases such as ‘extortionate expenses’ and ‘debased derivatives’. Finally Faine breaks up the gloss finish of the piece by leaving matt another sequence of larger letters that fill a circular space in the centre of the image, spelling ‘RUSSIAN ROULETTE’."

| "‘Hollywood Roller-coaster’ is based on Snakes and Ladders the game of chance in which ascending the ladders is a reward for virtue while vice is penalised by sliding down the snakes. There are always more snakes then ladders, as it has always been held that it is easier to follow the path of vice than adopt that of virtue. In this work each of the 100 squares contains the name of a Matinee idol or Hollywood star whose surname ranges from A to Z . As with the traditional game images are placed at the head and tail of the snakes, and at the top and bottom of the ladders. The position of each ‘star’ is positioned randomly and the selection of whether a person is on a ladder or a snake is determined by a famous or infamous role portrayed by them, or perhaps a little unfairly by the populist view of them as portrayed by the media. | "This is the second print Brad Faine has produced that is motivated by the bankers and the banking crisis. The first, The Red and the Black, was more general in that it referred to banking on a global scale, this one is more specifically aimed at the personal greed of individual bankers and their cavalier attitude towards other peoples' money. The main forms for this print are World Series poker chips and the implication that bankers treated trading as if they were in a casino. The title refers to the American bankers' self proclaimed epithet 'Masters of the Universe'. The smaller text refers to an alliterated collection of phrases that seemed appropriate to their actions and attitudes- bloated bonuses, legalised larceny and weasel watchdogs. The green background is reminiscent of a traditional poker table, and the main text leaves the viewer to fill in the implied last word- 'There must be a word that rhymes with banker...'
