The original painting was bought for the Tate Gallery in 1887.The inspiration for this image came during a boating trip Sargent took on the Thames river at Pangbourne in September 1885, with American artist Edwin Austin Abbey, during which he saw Chinese lanterns hanging among trees and lilies. The models for the painting were Polly and Dorothy Bernard, the daughters of the illustrator Frederick Barnard.This is one of the few figure compositions Sargent ever made out of doors in the Impressionist manner.
