Halifax takes inspiration from her immediate surroundings, drawing on places of special significance from her own life to create busy, bustling cityscapes, filled with vibrancy and character. ‘London at Length’ depicts a long panoramic of the London skyline, featuring all the familiar sites: from St Pauls to Tower Bridge, the Gherkin to the Shard, Halifax’s clear passion for the city speaks through the print, in all of the careful architectural detail. ‘London at Length’ is drawn predominantly in black ink, for a sketchy monochrome effect, but Halifax has picked out sections in bold colour: the Thames is blue; iconic London buses can be spotted in bright red; green spaces have been filled in; and the glass of certain buildings is highlighted in a soft turquoise. Though detailed, Halifax’s work refuses rigidity and realism, opting for an illustrative style where perspective is kept fluid (both technically and artistically) to allow Halifax’s unique style to shine."
