The rest of the city is filled in painstakingly with black ink, stretching back as far as the eye can see, with a soft blue sky and river for contrast against the monochrome. Long shadows cast by the skyscrapers across the Thames hint at the ever imposing nature of London’s upward growing skyline while soaring swifts reach far into the air, to remind the viewer of the delicate relationship between city and nature. ‘To Tower Bridge, Thames and Beyond’ is a powerful print, recasting London in Halifax’s inimitable style for maximum impact."

With masterful detail, Halifax has recreated this cross section of London, sketching in each street, building and tree, with an illustrative flare that manages to be both accurate and artistic. Like an architectural sketch-up, Halifax has kept most of the print monochrome - beautifully minimal black ink onto white - but here and there she has picked out detail in bold colour: leafy green trees and bright red buses, along with the soft blue of the Thames, add life to the image to create an appealing aesthetic."

Halifax takes inspiration from her immediate surroundings, drawing on places of special significance in her own life to create busy, bustling cityscapes, filled with vibrancy and character. ‘Hello London’ takes the Thames as its vantage point, looking down towards Blackfriars Bridge. Sparser than most of her prints, ‘Hello London’ is dominated by expanses of sky and river, with all of the city’s iconic buildings creating a frame: St Pauls to the left, the Oxo Tower at the right, the Gherkin and Canary Wharf ahead. Halifax has picked out the vibrant red of Blackfriars bridge, beautifully contrasting against the monochrome black ink of the buildings and, to the left, she has coloured a row of trees in deep auburn, to capture a rich, autumnal feel. The perspective is near impossible, a panoramic that couldn’t quite be captured by the eye, but that is where the beauty lies: though detailed and accurate, Halifax’s work refuses rigidity and strict realism, favouring an artistic fluidity, which allows her unique style to shine."

Halifax has kept much of the detail monochrome - like an architect’s sketch - but picked out certain sections in bold colour: a rich, red brick for the Royal Albert Hall, ash-green for the trees; two banners flying in orange and pink. For the sky, Halifax has used a repeated, graphic pattern, almost art deco in style, which works well against the careful illustration of the building. The beauty of the print lies in Halifax’s blending of technical skill and artistic flare: though detailed and accurate, her work refuses rigidity and strict realism, favouring a certain fluidity, which allows her unique style to shine."

The print is split into three main sections: comprising the most part, Halifax has drawn the beige-coloured shingle in careful, tiny detail; a small strip of sea, made up of a graphic wave design, slices across the middle of the print; and at the top, Halifax has used a flat, blue block for the sky. The relationship between the three sections - with their harmonising colours and contrasting textures - is minimal but aesthetically powerful. The focal point of the print is a white beach house, with bright orange roof and door, finished with the single word ‘LIFEGUARD’. There is a charming simplicity to the image which is deceptive: Halifax’s keen eye for colour, composition and illustration works hard to create an illusory naivety with enduring appeal."

Halifax takes inspiration from her immediate surroundings, drawing on places of special significance from her own life to create graphic landscapes filled with vibrancy and character. ‘Kings College, Cambridge’ has a foreboding tone: the black trees are bare; the imposing college - stretched across the print - is a dull grey; and both river and sky are made up from a design resembling blue birds in flight. There is real beauty in the austerity of the image, capturing the darkest moment of English wintertime in a way which is both romantic and bewitching. The perspective is near impossible, a panoramic that couldn’t quite be captured by the eye, but that is where the charm lies: though detailed and accurate, Halifax’s work refuses rigidity and strict realism, favouring an artistic fluidity, which allows her unique style to shine."

The image is dominated by sea and sky, both of which Halifax has rendered in a geometric blue pattern, which contrasts well against her illustrative style. The verdure of the island had been coloured in deep green but Halifax has left the rest of the print - all of the man made objects (boats, buildings, streets and walls) - in simple black ink. There is a beautiful, sketchy quality to the ink-drawn sections, and Halifax has artfully captured the sleepy character of the little Cornish island. "Crow - Purple By Rob Wass"
"Rob Wass is an artist who understands the majesty of the natural world. His prints centre around landscapes, birds and butterflies, balancing exceptional colour palettes with soft texture and careful composition. ‘Crow’ depicts, quite simply, a large crow in flight. The print’s sheer simplicity is where its strength lies: using lashings of black ink against swathes of deep purple, Wass has created the sublime bird - stark against a white background - out of an experimental application of paint, simulating all the drama and vulnerability of a Rorschach test. The bird, in this way, appears organic, despite - or because of - Wass’s mastery of artifice. Bold and beautiful, ‘Crow’ reimagines the natural world onto the canvas with bewitching style."

Crafted from a palette of earthy browns and sky blues, the print is full of careful detail: a striking example of the abstract shading into the figurative, and a truly beautiful piece to behold."

"Calf By Charming Baker"
"If contemporary artist Charming Baker can count Damien Hirst amongst his fans, there can be no doubt that this is a man of great talent. But don’t just take Hirst’s word for it: Baker’s esoteric prints can do all the talking, with their offbeat subjects, extraordinary execution and unique aesthetic. His work is best known for its relationship with destruction: Baker often damages his pieces by drilling, cutting, occasionally shooting at, and often defacing them in some way, to question the precious valuation of art in contemporary culture. ‘Calf’ depicts a rough but detailed sketch of a young cow, rendered in heavy graphite strokes against a white background. Baker has mixed up mediums by painting thick, golden-coloured lines, that intersect across the calfs body, like coils of rope. The layered materials clash in a way that confounds expectation, as the lines of abstraction, pasted onto the figurative sketch, transform the traditional image. It’s not an easy image to read but, like Hirst says, “who cares? Charming Baker’s paintings are great.”"
