Being square meant you could hang these flowers any way you wanted depending on what angle you liked. The original image for the flowers came from a photograph of seven hibiscus flowers taken by Patricia Caulfield in the magazine called Modern Photography. Warhol cropped this image to a perfect square and manipulating the flowers so they fitted. The use of someone else’s photograph in his work lead to a law suit and after this Warhol only used his own photographs in his work.
